The Film of the Future 

   

 

 I just started brainstorming the plot of the film with my partner Noah Ball. We decided that it would be in the Sci-Fi genre that would take place in the future. We thought that some plot elements would be inspired by Sci-Fi legends like Blade Runner.  This would give the viewer a nice blend of both nostalgic content inspired by previous directors and new, creative content coming straight from our own ideas.

 The setting would obviously be futuristic, but it would certainly be an obstacle to create that environment with very limited resources. Another possible obstacle in the future would be costuming and props fo the setting, as making them seem futuristic would be difficult. Despite this, we want to make the overall mise-en-scene elements seem both modern and present but also slightly further in the future. For example, Blade Runner’s setting is very urban and modern, with dark shadowy streets contrasted by the bright neon lights of the skyscrapers. We want to grab this idea and make it our own, by selecting a local urban setting, and highlighting the neon, bright lights to add a futuristic tone, but also darkening the surrounding area to give off a modern feel and keeping with the dark tone of the film. I’ve noticed that multiple other recent Sci-Fi films have used this idea, such as the dark green lighting of The Matrix and the lighting of the recent Star Trek films. However, our film in particular will not be one set in space or another faraway setting, but one set in the seemingly distant future of our own planet.

   At this point in the project, I am not only researching aspects of other iconic films in the genre, but also using that as a platform to lay the groundwork for what my film is going to be about and what the background story will be.

    It's amazing that you're already so invested in the set-up of your own film by talking about concepts like mise-en-scene. The only thing I could mention is that the spacing is kinda weird after the first paragraph. Keep up the good work though!

     At this point in the project I am considering the production and distribution aspects of my film. Even though this is a student made film and I'm not actually paying anyone for this or producing or distributing it, it's still interesting to see what strategies I would utilize in doing so for real.      As for the production aspect, I was researching different companies that produce low budget sci fi films, but sci fi is a genre where it is very hard for a low budget film to succeed, and it was hard to find any companies that actually specifically produce films for a low budget in that genre. However, I would use a small independent production company in order to minimize costs and match the small scale of my film. Working with an independent company would also give me a lot more creative freedom and I wouldn't be limited as much as if I worked with a large corporate controlling company. Out with the old

          It's getting closer to the shooting date, and I only now just started thinking of what kind of technology I would need to actually shoot on. Most people I've talked to are just using their phones for it, and that seems like a pretty solid option, but I was also considering using some other means to film the scenes.           Since phone cameras are so high quality now, people can film at the quality of some specialized video cameras. This seems like the easiest option since everyone always has their phones glued to their sides at all times, so its always readily available and overall really easy to just start shooting. It's also way easier to upload the footage from a phone to a program on a computer than if you were to upload it from a video camera. First Impressions

         I'm finding in my research that the truly great science fiction movies almost always have captivating and creative openings sequences, because that seems to be one of the most important things for a movie: a solid first impression. Captivating the audience and giving them a positive first opinion right when the film starts is huge, and this is clearly evident in what is considered to be one of the best opening sequences of all time, the scene from the original Star Wars.       Every second of this 7 minute scene is amazing. It starts out with the famous yellow text crawl to set the exposition, with the awesome theme music playing in the background. It then shows a giant star destroyer chasing a tiny cruiser, firing the laser cannons directly at it, with special effects that were years ahead of its time.
