Sound

So the editing is finally done and looks great, but now I have the job of making it sound like a movie. My previous research into the genre taught me that sound effects and music are huge in sci-fi, and I can personally confirm this as well. When I look at all the great sci-fi film openings, from the ominous empire theme entrance of Star Wars to the optimistic, emotional music of Star Trek, music plays a big part in the opening.

I started off just doing a general search for any source of background music tracks but I actually found a good source relatively fast. It's called melodyloops.com and they had hundreds of tracks (royalty free) that were sci-fi themed and downloadable. After an hour of scrolling and listening, I had picked out two tracks that fit the tone of the scene perfectly. One of which, labeled "Tense Chase" perfectly captured the mood and theme of the chase scene and we will use that music during the scene. The second one was labeled "Space Epic", and even though the film doesn't take place in space, the track had a very suspenseful ending that we are planning to use for the final plot twist shot and title reveal. Noah and I think this will add a lot of suspense and emotion to the reveal and pretty much complete the scene.

As for the sound effects, really the only natural sound we had was dialogue, footsteps, and a plastic cup dropping on the ground. Noah recorded his dialogue and footsteps and I recorded mine without too much difficulty. It was something I hadn't really done before, but I just went out I my driveway, downloaded a sound recording app for my phone, positioned it where it was positioned relative to me in each shot, and ran by it. For the dialogue I had to go in my closet so the quality would be good, and it took me a couple tries to get my recording on pace with the actual shot, but I did it pretty quickly overall. Now let's just hope everything works out in time for the rapidly approaching deadline.
